UNDERSTANDING PERSPECTIVES on the sex industry

Living in Community (LIC) is a provincial non-profit organization and registered charity, based in Vancouver, that is working to change the conversations we have about sex work.

LIC brings together diverse stakeholders to collaboratively improve the health and safety of sex workers and address community concerns as they arise.

We focus on getting at root causes of issues like stigma, poverty, and gender-based violence that create systemic vulnerability for sex workers, and we seek to build understanding and common ground with other community members.

Our Story

Back in 2003, violence against sex workers in Vancouver was unacceptably high. Sixty-seven sex workers had gone missing and/or had been murdered in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Training and Education

Living in Community offers a variety of workshops to increase knowledge about sex work with a view to improving services and supports for sex workers...

Our Online Training is Now Live!

Living in Community has developed an online, self-directed version of our Curriculum for Change training!

Curriculum for Change has been delivered to thousands of learners since 2013, and we are excited to make its contents more accessible to more people through this new online format.

Curriculum for Change Online offers four separate courses to meet each learner's needs.

Living in Community: Understanding Perspectives on the Sex Industry highlights our unique community development model. Since starting in 2004 in Vancouver, BC as a series of community conversations, Living in Community (LIC) has evolved into an incorporated non-profit organization that works across and beyond British Columbia, bringing diverse stakeholders together with the common goal of collaboratively improving the health and safety of sex workers while reducing stigma and harm.

Looking back to how our project began, this video explores LIC's innovative model and demonstrates how it has made an impact on communities in Vancouver and beyond.
